Former Duke head men’s basketball coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski shared his raw emotions in response to the shocking loss of the Blue Devils to UConn in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA tournament. During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Coach K described the defeat as “heartbreaking” and admitted that he couldn’t find any peace on Sunday night after witnessing the game.

The Blue Devils held a commanding lead of 19 points and were ahead by 15 points at halftime, setting the stage for a potential victory. However, UConn mounted an extraordinary comeback, culminating in a game-winning deep three-pointer from freshman guard Braylon Mullins with just 0.4 seconds left on the clock. Despite his disappointment, Coach K graciously congratulated Mullins during his interview on the podcast.

Expressing his empathy for the Duke coaching staff and players, Krzyzewski revealed his concern regarding how they will cope with the heart-wrenching loss. As the game entered its final moments, Duke had the opportunity to secure the win as UConn guard Silas Demary Jr. missed one of two crucial free throws with only 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

With a narrow lead of 72-70, Duke’s strategy was clear: inbound the ball, draw a foul, and convert both free throws to seal the win. However, UConn coach Dan Hurley instructed his team to aggressively pressure Duke, leading to a crucial interception in the dying moments of the game. This paved the way for Mullins’ historic three-pointer, propelling UConn to their third Final Four appearance in four years.

Having coached Duke to 13 Final Four appearances and five national titles during his illustrious 42-year tenure, Krzyzewski retired in 2022, passing the torch to his protege Jon Scheyer. While Scheyer has led the Blue Devils to multiple Elite Eight and Final Four appearances in recent years, devastating losses have marred their championship aspirations.

The defeat to UConn marked an agonizing chapter in Duke’s quest for a national title, with their last championship victory dating back 11 years. Despite the setbacks, Duke remains a dominant force in college basketball under Scheyer’s leadership and is poised for sustained success in the future. The resilience and determination of the Blue Devils highlight their unwavering commitment to excellence, ensuring that they will continue to be a formidable contender in the years to come.
