The Daphne retail and residential development project, still pending approval, is set to transform a plot of empty farmland at the intersection of Highway 181 and County Road 64 in Daphne, Alabama. Spearheaded by Montgomery-based Trotman Company, the venture is a three-phase endeavor that will feature a Neighborhood Walmart, several retail outparcels, and 200 upscale apartments. These plans have been meticulously crafted in collaboration with the city of Daphne to pay homage to the area’s rich history while reducing the originally intended 300 apartments to 200. Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune expressed confidence in the project’s approval at the imminent City Council meeting, praising the developer’s efforts to align with the city’s vision for the development.

The design of the complex will draw inspiration from Daphne’s Italian heritage, constructed with an Italian architectural aesthetic that aims to seamlessly blend the development into the fabric of the community. The first phase will see the establishment of the Neighborhood Walmart grocery store as the focal point, embodying the overarching Italian theme. Subsequent phases will gradually integrate additional retail outlets and culminate in the construction of the luxurious apartments. LeJeune acknowledged that some residents may question the necessity of more apartments at this juncture, but emphasized the prospective benefits, including enhanced accessibility to essential amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, and retail spaces that are currently lacking in the vicinity.

As part of the agreement with the city, Trotman will undertake various enhancements to the infrastructure surrounding the development, including upgrades to the roundabout at County Road 64 and 13 and the creation of sidewalks along County Road 64 to enhance pedestrian access. Local residents like Lance Cole are eagerly anticipating the project’s implementation, particularly looking forward to the convenience that the incoming Walmart and associated amenities will offer. Once the City Council greenlights the proposal, construction is expected to commence promptly, with a targeted completion date set for 2029.

The imminent approval of the Daphne retail and residential development signifies a significant milestone for the community, poised to revitalize a vacant expanse of land and introduce a host of new amenities, retail options, and upscale living spaces. The meticulous planning and attention to detail evident in the project’s design underscore the commitment of all parties involved to create a development that not only meets the city’s needs but also respects and celebrates its unique heritage and identity. With a strong emphasis on community integration and sustainable growth, the project represents a promising step forward for Daphne’s ongoing development and evolution.
