Insurance adjuster in Broward County allegedly stole more than $611,000 from victims of Hurricane Ian
A South Florida insurance adjuster has been arrested for allegedly exploiting Hurricane Ian victims by withholding over $600,000 in insurance settlement money. Francisco Javier Chaparro Araus, 45, from Miramar, faces multiple charges following an investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services.
Investigators discovered that between Oct. 3, 2022, and Nov. 30, 2022, Chaparro Araus engaged in “fraudulent, unethical, and dishonest acts within the insurance agency.” In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, which wreaked havoc across southwest Florida and the Gulf Coast after making landfall on Sept. 28, 2022, Chaparro Araus targeted vulnerable homeowners who had suffered property damage.
Working for All Elements Public Adjusters LLC, Chaparro Araus entered into written agreements with homeowners to represent them in their insurance claims. These agreements stipulated that he would negotiate and secure a fair settlement on their behalf in exchange for a 10% contingency fee based on recovered damages.
After reviewing claim files and documents provided by multiple insurance companies, investigators discovered that the claims were resolved, and settlement checks were issued. However, the checks were deposited into a Bank of America business account controlled by Chaparro Araus, who allegedly failed to remit a total of $611,473.39 in insurance settlement proceeds owed to ten policyholders. The funds were reportedly depleted through various transactions, including online transfers, Zelle transactions, wire transfers, debit card purchases, and cash withdrawals at establishments like the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Calder Casino.
Chaparro Araus now faces charges including obtaining property over $50,000 through fraud, exploitation of the elderly between $20,000 and $100,000, misapplying insurance premiums over $100,000, and misapplying insurance premiums between $20,000 and $100,000. As of the latest records, he was not listed as an inmate in Broward County jail.
