ou always spend time recording the drums. They were done and then everyone else plays to them. So you really only have seven days to write, record, and mix whoever’s next. We used the same mixer from the last album, Rich Mouser, of course. He’s brilliant. We bounced mixes off of him and off of each other as we went along, and it came together so fast.

But, at the end of the day, there’s just no explanation for what happened. I can’t explain it. The collaboration of the band just gelled again. We really, really worked well together. Everybody played out of their minds. Our confidence was there. Everybody knows each other so well now. And so it was very exciting to work with everybody and bring a lyric in and have it come to life so quickly. Everyone was all in. Everyone was just so all in. It was one of the most intense things that I’ve ever done, I think.

Keeping it secret was very difficult for me. You know how it is when your kid is having a birthday party and you have to keep it secret from him until the day of the party. They’re like, “Why is my dad acting so weird?” So, to me, I’m just sort of a bubbling-over person, I’m generally laughing and so excited about stuff. To be like, “I’ve got this secret,” and my wife is like, “What’s the matter with you today?” and I’m like, “I’m just holding something in. I’m not going to tell you.” It was a weird dichotomy for me because it’s not my normal M.O.
