Artists like BUS, MILLI, Tilly Birds, pami, and WIM are leading the way on Bandwagon Asia.
Thailand’s music industry is making strides towards international recognition as the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) continues its Music Exchange initiative for the third consecutive year. The primary objective is to propel Thai artists onto the global stage, capitalizing on the flourishing trend of music tourism. So far, a total of 22 Thai talents, including BUS because of you i shine, MILLI, mindfreakkk, pami, SIN (Singular), Tilly Birds, WHISPERS, and WIM, have been chosen in two selection rounds, with more expected to be added until the application deadline on 16 May.
These chosen artists are slated to showcase their talents at over 20 renowned international music festivals in key regions such as the United States, Mexico, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This move signifies a clear indication of Thailand’s music industry amplifying its global aspirations at a rapid pace.
The timing is impeccable as Asia has emerged as a focal point for music tourism, with projections indicating a market value of nearly US$19.9 billion, representing 21.8% of the global share. Musical extravaganzas like Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival, Thailand’s Big Mountain Music Festival, and Bangkok Music City are transforming into vital business platforms that facilitate collaborations, touring circuits, and the cultivation of international fanbases.
Dr. Chakrit Pichayangkoon, Director of CEA, emphasized how this transition enhances Asia’s and Thailand’s presence in the worldwide music discourse. Festivals serve as gateways for artists to broaden their reach globally, fostering cross-border collaborations and networking opportunities with international festival organizers, scouts, and agencies.
Building upon the triumphs of previous editions, Music Exchange 2026 aims to support Thai artists by offering financial assistance to perform overseas. Additionally, the initiative facilitates business matching with global industry stakeholders to establish enduring partnerships covering various aspects such as touring opportunities and production collaborations.
The music sector in Thailand is experiencing a steady surge, currently ranking 29th globally with a market value exceeding 3.5 billion baht. With artists like MILLI gaining traction on the international scene and groups like Tilly Birds amassing a strong regional following, endeavors like Music Exchange are propelling Thai music onto the world stage, affirming the readiness of Thai musicians to captivate global audiences with their diverse musical offerings.
