Man nearly pushed in front of light rail train, suspect charged in shocking video

A disturbing incident was captured on video at a Seattle light rail platform last month, showing a man almost being pushed into an oncoming train. Prosecutors have since charged the suspect with attempted murder.

The video footage depicts a man in dark clothing standing on the platform, who then forcefully shoves a passenger, causing them to stumble towards the tracks. Fortunately, the passenger manages to regain balance and avoid the oncoming train. Despite this, the suspect pushes the passenger once more before fleeing the scene.

The individual identified as the suspect in this harrowing incident is named Eliseo Melendez. Authorities arraigned Melendez earlier this week, with his attorney successfully petitioning the court to prohibit the media from displaying his face due to doubts surrounding his identity.

Law enforcement officers visited a mental health facility close to the light rail station and showed a photo of the suspect to an employee, who positively identified him as Melendez. Detectives discovered clothing matching those worn by the suspect in the surveillance footage in Melendez’s room, although his defense team argued that the clothing was common and not unique.

Issues related to Melendez’s mental competence have also arisen. Prosecutors revealed that he had a warrant out for his arrest in Renton for assault and was previously found unfit to stand trial after allegedly committing a violent act against his sister. Following his attempted murder charge, Melendez claimed that someone may have stolen his clothing, insinuating the involvement of a nonexistent twin.

Prosecutors assert that the suspect deliberately chose the timing of the attack at the light rail platform to cause the most harm. As a result, the judge mandated that Melendez undergo a mental health evaluation to assess his mental state.
