Ex-Turnstile guitarist accused of trying to kill bandmate’s father
A member of the band Turnstile, Brady Ebert, who previously played the guitar, is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder and assault for allegedly hitting the father of the band’s lead singer with his car in suburban Maryland. Ebert, 33, was one of the founding members of the band hailing from Baltimore. The Montgomery County Police Department confirmed that Ebert was arrested on Tuesday and is currently being held without bond. No comments have been made available from his attorney at this time.
The victim, identified as a 78-year-old neighbor named William Yates, is the father of Brendan Yates, the lead singer and co-founder of Turnstile. Following the incident, the band issued a statement expressing their shock and dismay at Ebert’s actions. According to the band, Ebert visited Brendan’s parents’ house and allegedly used his vehicle to strike Brendan’s father, causing severe physical injuries. William Yates survived the attack and underwent surgery to address his injuries. The band expressed their support for the victim’s recovery and emphasized their disappointment in Ebert’s behavior.
Turnstile formally severed ties with Ebert back in 2022 due to what they described as a consistent pattern of harmful behavior impacting both Ebert himself, the band, and the broader community. The band highlighted their efforts to help Ebert access support and recovery services but ultimately had to make the difficult decision to part ways with him, citing threats of violence and breakdowns in communication as key factors.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon around 4:45 p.m. local time when officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run at a residence in Silver Spring, Maryland, just north of Washington D.C. Ebert reportedly struck a neighbor with his sedan during an argument in a driveway, subsequently fleeing the scene without alerting authorities or providing assistance to the injured individual. The victim sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The suspect’s vehicle, with front-end damage, was located abandoned nearby.
Following an investigation that involved reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Ebert, leading to his detention. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1 in Montgomery County District Court as legal proceedings continue. Turnstile, known for its dedicated fan base, achieved significant success over the years before releasing its last album.
