New release from The Melancholy Kings: “New Girl” available for online streaming
New Jersey’s indie rock outfit, The Melancholy Kings, has captured the essence of a classic film noir with their latest single, ‘New Girl’. Off their second album ‘Her Favorite Disguise’, the track delivers a blend of vulnerability and atmospheric depth reminiscent of The Replacements and Pink Floyd. Released under the Magic Door Record Label, the album delves into the experiences of life in New York City and New Jersey with all its intricacies and eccentricities.
Lead by Mike Potenza’s tender vocals and delicate acoustic groundwork, ‘New Girl’ takes a departure from conventional indie-rock sounds to craft a cinematic, slow-burning arrangement. Backed by sparse drums from Paul Andrew and textured guitar work by Peter Horvath, along with Scott Selig’s harmonics on the upright bass, the song is elevated by cellist Carolyn Jeselsohn, whose elegant melodies infuse a timeless quality into the composition.
Accompanied by a mesmerizing video created by Selig, ‘New Girl’ pays homage to the allure of a bygone era in cinema. The lyrics dissect the blurred lines between reality and the silver screen, while the video’s dreamlike visuals reinforce this theme, creating a poignant narrative that revolves around longing for someone from a black-and-white celluloid era.
Prior to ‘New Girl’, The Melancholy Kings introduced ‘Bitcoin Elegy’, exploring the diminishing significance of personal connections in the digital age, ‘Victoria’, a jangly guitar-driven track, and ‘UV’, a quasi-psychedelic single featuring renowned trumpeter Mac Gollehon. The band’s lineup comprises of Mike Potenza and Scott Selig, who bonded over their mutual involvement in the ’90s-’00s NYC indie scene, while drummer Paul Andrew and guitarist Peter Horvath complete the ensemble.
Produced by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, NJ, ‘Her Favorite Disguise’ pays homage to the raw ’80s pre-grunge alt-rock era. The album, which features additional artists like Reneé LoBue, Olivia Selig, Ray Ketchem, and Carl Riehl, can be experienced on limited edition 12” vinyl and streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Bandcamp.
The Melancholy Kings have crafted a musical journey with ‘New Girl’ and ‘Her Favorite Disguise’, embracing elements of nostalgia, introspection, and cinematic storytelling within their indie rock soundscapes. Through a fusion of heartfelt lyrics, warm acoustic compositions, and a penchant for cinematic visuals, the band continues to captivate audiences with their evocative musical narratives.
