Jon Spencer reveals upcoming solo album with new track “Knock ‘Em Out”
Jon Spencer may no longer have a Blues Explosion at his back, but that isn’t stopping him from continuing to rock out with his signature energy and style. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion has been inactive since 2016, leaving Spencer to forge ahead on his own. In 2014, Spencer released a solo album titled Sick Of Being Sick!, and this summer, he will be dropping a new LP titled Songs Of Personal Loss And Protest. This latest album was recorded with his current band, featuring members Kendall Wind and Spider Bowman from the Bobby Lees.
Prior to his solo work, Spencer made his mark with renowned noise-rock bands such as Pussy Galore and Boss Hog. While he has explored different musical paths over the years, his upcoming album seems to harken back to the sound he cultivated with JSBX. It’s intriguing to think about whether Spencer still yearns to shout out “Blues Explosion!” out of habit, despite the band’s hiatus.
The lead single off the new album, “Knock ‘Em Out,” showcases Spencer in his classic raucous vocal style. It channels more of his persona than themes of personal loss and protest, but that doesn’t deter from its impact. Spencer’s knack for being authentically himself shines through, making him unmatched in his own right.
