Green Carnation’s “Sanguis” video takes a darker turn
Norwegian progressive metal icons Green Carnation have recently released a chilling new music video for the title track of their latest album, “Sanguis”. This song serves as the centerpiece of their ongoing A Dark Poem trilogy, which delves into the most intimate and vulnerable aspects of the band’s three-decade career. Drawing from their personal experiences, the band explores themes of emotional turmoil and childhood trauma in this nine-minute song.
The “Sanguis” video complements the haunting melodies and emotionally charged lyrics of the track by bringing a traumatic childhood memory to life. Bassist and lyricist Stein Roger Sordal confessed that he initially contemplated toning down the raw lyrics, but ultimately chose to maintain their honesty. Vocalist Kjetil Nordhus highlighted that it took decades for Sordal to fully grasp the complexities of the family dynamics that inspired these stories, a revelation that only dawned on him after becoming a parent himself.
Established in the early ’90s by Tchort, formerly of Emperor, Green Carnation rose to fame with the release of the hour-long epic “Light of Day, Day of Darkness”. Following a hiatus, the band made a triumphant return with “Leaves of Yesteryear” in 2020, setting the stage for their current trilogy inspired by Shakespeare’s Ophelia. Part II of the trilogy, “Sanguis”, follows the success of “The Shores of Melancholia” and continues to captivate audiences with its blend of Gothic intensity and acoustic vulnerability.
The new album comprises six tracks, featuring Sordal on lead vocals for the track “Loneliness Untold, Loneliness Unfold”, showcasing a more introspective side of the band. The album closes with the gentle ballad “Lunar Tale”, highlighted by delicate flute accompaniment. Recorded and mixed at dUb Studio, and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory, the album is now available for streaming and purchase on various platforms. With the release of Part II, fans remain on the edge of their seats, anticipating the conclusion of this tragic musical journey.
By delving into personal traumas and family dynamics, Green Carnation continues to push creative boundaries and explore new musical territories with their latest release. The band’s willingness to confront challenging subject matter and infuse it with their signature blend of Gothic and acoustic elements sets them apart as pioneers in the progressive metal genre. As “Sanguis” and the rest of the album unfold, listeners are drawn into a dark and emotional narrative that leaves a lasting impact long after the music fades.
