Green Bay Southwest High School educator Andrew Crane made a significant transition from wanting to be a city planner to teaching about cities and their inner workings. Despite not considering a career in education initially, Crane, who is a Golden Apple award recipient, has become a beloved figure among students at Southwest High School.
The students at Southwest High School, like junior Sean Niesen, express their admiration for Crane, calling him one of their favorite teachers. Fellow junior Ginny Denil finds Mr. Crane amusing, while senior Lucia Suarez acknowledges his remarkable academic abilities. The overwhelming praise from students is a testament to Crane’s impact as an educator at the school.
Over the past 25 years, Crane has shared his passion for sociology, economics, geography, and government with his students. While his teaching career began after a pivotal canoeing trip with friends, Crane soon realized that working in a corporate setting was not fulfilling for him. With the encouragement of his wife, he decided to pursue a career in teaching, a decision he has never regretted.
Crane’s enthusiasm for his job is fueled by his love for various subjects and his desire to immerse students in the world of learning. He helps students understand complex topics such as real bills in Congress and economic data related to unemployment and labor force participation rates. By demonstrating the practical applications of these concepts in their lives, Crane strives to make learning engaging and relevant for his students.
Students at Southwest High School appreciate Crane’s teaching methods, describing him as extremely intelligent in how he structures learning and motivates them to reach their full potential. His ability to simplify complex topics and encourage student participation contributes to student engagement and learning outcomes in his classes.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Crane is deeply involved with Southwest High School’s athletic programs. Serving as the voice of Trojan athletics for 18 years, he announces football, basketball, and soccer games, introducing audiences to talented athletes who have gone on to pursue professional careers. Jokingly, Crane dreams of one day being the voice of Lambeau Field, showcasing his passion for sports and school spirit.
The Golden Apple Award, which Crane received, acknowledges his dedication, professionalism, and leadership as an educator. The award ceremony on April 22 will recognize him and other exceptional educators in the Greater Green Bay area. Sponsored by the Greater Green Bay Chamber and the Donald and Darlene Long Family Foundation, the Golden Apple Awards program aims to highlight the importance of quality education and honor outstanding educators in the community.
