Jim Root of Slipknot compares Fender Telecasters to sunglasses in new interview

Metal guitarists often opt for Jackson, Charvel, or ESP guitars, but Jim Root of Slipknot makes a strong case for Fender guitars in the metal genre. As a long-time signature artist for Fender, Root has his own signature Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Jazzmaster models equipped with EMG pickups and minimalist, metal-friendly specifications.

Root explains in a recent video that he was initially drawn to Fender guitars because they were not traditionally associated with metal music. He mentions that iconic rock musicians often played Fender Telecasters, and he wanted to go against the norm of being labeled as nu metal or metal by choosing a guitar with a different association. This decision represented a rebellious attitude, akin to a “fuck you,” which is characteristic of metal, punk rock, and rock and roll culture.

Instead of following expectations and playing a stereotypical pointy metal guitar, Root decided to embrace the classic, timeless design of the Fender Telecaster. He compares guitars to sunglasses, stating that classics like the Telecaster never go out of style and will always have a place in the industry, despite various modern interpretations. Root’s choice of the Telecaster reflects his desire to rebel against expectations and stand out in the metal community.

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the Fender Telecaster, which was originally introduced in 1951. Initially known as the Broadcaster in late 1950, the guitar was later renamed the Telecaster due to a trademark conflict with Gretsch. In honor of this milestone, Fender released a limited-edition 75th Anniversary Telecaster lineup, featuring five models across different ranges like Player II, American Professional, and American Ultra II, including a Cabronita model.
