Vandoliers shout out in support of trans rights in “Girl on the Run”
Vandoliers, who will be performing live again on June 20th at the Azkena Rock Festival 2026 in Vitoria, has released a new song titled “Girls on the Run,” shedding light on the life of a transgender woman.
This song serves as a protest anthem, telling the story of a transgender woman from Texas who is fleeing to save her life alongside her family. Vandoliers vocalist Jenni (Gin-ee) Rose, who came out as transgender last year during the band’s first tour, captures feelings of desperation and fear in “Girl on the Run.” She narrates, “I have to go somewhere else, be someone else, get by. They will hang you if you are not from a right-wing Christian billionaire son. Because around here they are waving their flag, letting me know that I am not welcome. I will not bow to anyone. I will leave at dawn. I am a girl on the run. Running from Texas. Well, it’s not what I want, but it must be done. I grab my bag and load my gun.”
“Girl on the Run” was produced by Ted Hutt, a collaborator of Vandoliers and a British producer known for working with bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, The Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly, Lucero, among others.
The journey through addiction and gender dysphoria culminated in the decision to come out as transgender, a personal journey documented in Vandoliers’ album from last year, “Life Behind Bars.”
This track is an act of solidarity and enlightenment, confronting the struggles and fears faced by the transgender community, showcasing the challenges, resilience, and hardships experienced by transgender individuals, shedding light on their fight for acceptance and understanding in a world that often others them.
