Insight from a Typical Steelers Fan: Time for the NFL Draft
The long-awaited 2026 NFL Draft is finally upon us in Pittsburgh, and as a die-hard Steelers fan, I am more than ready to immerse myself in all the excitement it brings. From the festivities taking place on the North Shore to the electrifying atmosphere in the city, I am fully committed to being a part of it all, especially on the first day of the draft.
I plan to make a grand entrance into the city by driving in on Wednesday and staying with friends in a house overlooking the Ohio River throughout the weekend. Hotel accommodations are simply out of reach due to the surge in prices, with an estimated influx of 100,000 to 250,000 people daily. This surge in visitors will undoubtedly lead to heavy traffic congestion and exorbitant parking costs, with reports indicating that some parking spots are going for as high as $94 per day.
To beat the parking chaos and high prices, I have decided to take advantage of the Football Flyer, a convenient and cost-effective transportation solution. This free service sponsored by local organizations offers four PRT routes, including the 99W route, with a park-and-ride option from University Boulevard in Moon Township.
While Pittsburgh is no stranger to hosting the NFL Draft, with a history that dates back to the 1948 draft, the excitement surrounding this year’s event is palpable. The 1948 draft was a closed affair, lasting 13 hours and featuring 32 rounds with 300 total picks. A pivotal secret meeting that occurred in Pittsburgh resulted in the Steelers securing players like Bobby Gage, Harper Davis, and Bill Walsh. On the first day of the draft, I plan to start early by catching the Football Flyer and arriving on the North Shore before noon.
