Explosive Rainbow Orchestra: A Joyful Jukebox
The forthcoming Extravaganza titled “Exploding Rainbow Orchestra: The Jukebox of Joy” marks an exciting new chapter in the colorful story of the Ensemble. Set to grace the stage of the prestigious Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre at Aotea Centre on Sunday, July 12, this spectacular one-night event promises to be a visual and auditory feast for the senses, showcasing a fusion of classical music elements and rock energy.
Under the guidance of the masterful conductor Joshua Worthington-Church, the Exploding Rainbow Orchestra comprises over 40 talented musicians from renowned bands like The Beths, Princess Chelsea, LEAO, and Fazerdaze. This psychedelic and orchestral powerhouse blends traditional instruments with modern rock instruments, including strings, horns, harps, guitars, synthesizers, and percussion, creating a unique and exhilarating sound. The performances are enhanced by a dazzling display of lights, lasers, and mirrorballs, transforming each show into an otherworldly experience.
Following the success of previous sold-out concerts known as The Exploding Rainbow Orchestra Songbooks, the Ensemble is set to unveil The Jukebox of Joy. This exciting production promises to be an interdisciplinary extravaganza that revisits and reinterprets works created in collaboration with some of New Zealand’s most talented songwriters.
The Jukebox of Joy will feature a star-studded lineup of contributing artists, including Chelsea Prastiti, Diggy Dupé, Grecco Romank, Hollie Fullbrook, Elizabeth Stokes, Joshua Worthington-Church, Mainard Larkin, Princess Chelsea, Priya Sami, Rachel Clarke, Samara Alofa, Steph Brown, and Yolanda Fagan. In keeping with the cultural significance of the 2026 Matariki period, the event will also include a special Rangatuone conduction by Rāhana Tito-Taylor.
In a departure from traditional music performances, The Jukebox of Joy will expand beyond music to incorporate elements of theater, dance, narration, and cutting-edge lighting design. Dominic Hoey, the punk rock poet laureate, will serve as the narrator, weaving the evening’s events into a cohesive and emotionally resonant journey, creating a fully immersive experience for the audience.
The Exploding Rainbow Orchestra has gained a reputation for delivering unforgettable live music experiences, and The Jukebox of Joy is set to raise the bar even higher with its dream lineup of musical collaborations. This one-night-only event promises to captivate audiences with its dazzling visuals, innovative performances, and exceptional talent taking center stage at Aotea Centre’s grand Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre.
