Rostam Batmanglij is making waves in the music industry with the upcoming release of his third solo album, “American Stories,” scheduled for May 15. One of the standout tracks from the album, “Back Of A Truck,” has been gaining attention for its unique blend of American folk influences with Middle Eastern tones. The track showcases Rostam’s musical expertise and sets the tone for what listeners can expect from the full album.

Co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr., “Back Of A Truck” features a complex instrumental arrangement that includes electric saz from Iranian-American musician Amir Yaghmai and pedal steel from Daniel Aged. The combination of country textures with microtonal melodies creates a rich and layered sound that captures the essence of driving through America with the windows down. Rostam explains that he wanted to experiment with different musical elements, such as juxtaposing country pedal steel with Middle Eastern influences, to create a unique listening experience.

The lyrics of “Back Of A Truck” delve into themes of memory and nostalgia, focusing on the bittersweet feeling of being reminded of someone from the past. Rostam describes the song as a reflection on past relationships and the emotional impact they can have on us. The music video for the track, directed by Antony Muse, adds another layer to the narrative, portraying a queer road trip story that unfolds between New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts.

“American Stories” is a culmination of Rostam’s experiences and influences as an American with Iranian heritage. His unique perspective shines through in the album’s material, which draws from a wide range of musical traditions and cultural backgrounds. As a multi-instrumentalist, Rostam’s contributions on acoustic guitar, piano, drums, and percussion play a central role in shaping the album’s sound, further showcasing his versatility and talent as a musician.

Rostam’s solo career has been marked by a commitment to pushing musical boundaries and exploring new sonic landscapes. After departing from Vampire Weekend in 2016, he has continued to evolve his sound, merging indie, pop, and experimental genres to create a signature style that is uniquely his own. “American Stories” builds on the success of his previous releases, “Half-Light” (2017) and “Changephobia” (2021), solidifying his place as a pioneering artist in the music industry.

With the release of “Back Of A Truck,” Rostam joins a growing movement of artists incorporating live performance elements and traditional instruments into their music. This trend towards cross-cultural composition and analogue instrumentation highlights the importance of blending old and new sounds to create something fresh and innovative. Rostam’s work exemplifies this approach, demonstrating how diverse influences can come together to form a cohesive and compelling musical narrative.
