Keith Urban is set to embark on a new musical journey as he swaps his cowboy boots for deck shoes. The country music sensation has revealed that his upcoming album, Flow State, will explore the smooth sounds of yacht rock, set to be released on June 12.
In a statement, Urban expressed his desire to channel the relaxed and carefree vibes of classic yacht rock tunes for this fresh collection of songs. He envisioned the album as an ode to the timeless melodies that evoke images of sunny days spent by the water, sipping refreshing drinks and soaking up the sun.
Describing the evolution of Flow State, Urban shared, “What began as a lighthearted project quickly blossomed into a full-fledged album.” The record features 10 covers of beloved yacht rock tracks, as well as exciting collaborations with industry heavyweights John Mayer and Little Big Town. Additionally, fans can look forward to an original song titled “We Go Back,” featuring the iconic vocals of Michael McDonald.
Among the classic tunes given a new spin by Urban are Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” Player’s “Baby Come Back,” and Little River Band’s “Help Is on Its Way.” By showcasing these nostalgic hits in a fresh light, Urban aims to transport listeners back to a time when the strains of everyday life could be momentarily forgotten in the embrace of music.
Reflecting on the essence of yacht rock, Urban emphasized its role as a soothing balm for the turbulent times we live in. He noted, “The roots of this genre lie in providing solace and respite from the challenges of the world.” At its core, yacht rock is an invitation to come together, revel in the present moment, and celebrate our shared humanity. Urban hopes that listeners will find a sense of relaxation, unity, and optimism in the familiar tunes reimagined on Flow State.
Collaborating with producer Dann Huff, Urban completed the album at his studio in Nashville, infusing each track with his signature style and passion for storytelling through music. By reinventing yacht rock favorites and adding his own unique twist, Urban invites fans to embark on a musical voyage that promises to be both nostalgic and refreshing.
