Nixon Boyd releases new song “How I Know I’m Home”: Listen
Nixon Boyd has been an integral part of the Canadian indie rock band Hollerado since 2007. Recently, Boyd made an exciting announcement about the release of his debut solo album, Every Time We Turn A Corner. Alongside this news, he also unveiled a heartfelt track titled “Trouble Of Your Own” and is now back with another captivating song called “How I Know I’m Home.”
“How I Know I’m Home” showcases a melancholic acoustic beauty reminiscent of legendary artists like Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. Boyd revealed insights about the song, explaining how his friend Luke Doucet introduced him to open D tuning, leading to the creation of this poignant piece. Boyd structured the song with a long, winding melody to allow for a detailed and somewhat rambling monologue in the verses before reaching the poignant chorus, “that’s how I know I’m home.” The sparse arrangement of the track features a synthesizer, a departure from the rest of the album’s instrumentation. Boyd experimented with strings and horns but ultimately felt they were too serious and opted for warmth and informality with a Moog Sub 37. Despite acknowledging that the topic of finding ‘home’ may seem cheesy, Boyd’s personal experiences as an army brat moving frequently have shaped his perspective on the concept of home.
The LP was painstakingly crafted in Boyd’s converted auto shop studio in Ontario. However, an unfortunate incident occurred when the nearly completed record’s hard drive was stolen from his car. Boyd spent an entire year trying to recreate the lost work, showing his dedication and passion for the album. “How I Know I’m Home” offers a glimpse into the emotional journey Boyd has undertaken in creating the album.
The tracklist for Every Time We Turn A Corner includes a mix of introspective and evocative songs such as “Golden Days,” “Never In A Million Years,” and “You Will Always Get Away With It.” Each song promises a unique listening experience filled with Boyd’s distinctive musical style and lyrical depth. The album is self-released and set to drop on 7/3, marking a significant milestone in Boyd’s solo career.
From the emotive storytelling in “How I Know I’m Home” to the personal hardships faced during the album’s production, Every Time We Turn A Corner is shaping up to be a poignant and immersive musical experience. Nixon Boyd’s creative vision and penchant for heartfelt expression shine through in every track, promising listeners a captivating and introspective journey through his solo debut album.
