FedEx to reimburse customers for tariff refunds, check arrival timeline

FedEx has pledged to pass on any tariff refund payments received from the Trump administration back to its customers, making a commitment that sets it apart from other companies who have not made similar promises.

Although a portal has been opened for U.S. businesses to claim tariff refunds, only a few companies have agreed to reimburse their customers for any savings realized. FedEx stands out in this regard by offering to return refund money to customers who had to pay higher prices due to tariffs imposed by the previous administration.

The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in February nullified President Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to levy broad tariffs on goods from countries worldwide. Following this decision, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) introduced the Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries (CAPE) tariff claim portal on April 20, allowing over 300,000 importers to seek refunds totaling over $166 billion plus interest.

However, only importers of record (IORs) and customs brokers are eligible to file claims through the portal, leaving ordinary consumers who indirectly bore the burden of the tariffs without a direct means of recourse. FedEx has taken a different approach by committing to refund money from the IEEPA tariffs to both shippers and consumers once they start receiving refunds from CBP.

The suspension of the “de minimis” rule by the Trump administration resulted in increased prices for consumers, who were previously shielded from import duties on foreign products valued at $800 or less. FedEx has embraced its responsibility by actively engaging in the refund process, prioritizing submissions based on liquidation dates and promising to act promptly when refunds are received.

While the refund process may take 60 to 90 days, FedEx has assured its customers that it will work diligently to issue refunds for IEEPA tariffs paid to them as soon as the funds are received from CBP. As part of this commitment, the company has remained transparent and will provide clear communication regarding the refund process as further guidance becomes available.

Despite facing legal challenges and uncertainties, FedEx’s dedication to returning tariff refund money to its customers stands as a commendable effort. By stepping up when others have not, FedEx sets a positive example of corporate responsibility and customer care in navigating complex trade issues and government actions.
