Il Volo makes comeback after 15 years with new PBS special in Detroit, leading local music scene
Il Volo, an operatic group, is making a comeback after 15 years since filming its first PBS special in Detroit. The group, comprised of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble, fondly recalls their beginnings in Detroit and how it marked the start of their professional journey in the United States. The trio of teenagers from Italy formed Il Volo after appearing on a TV singing competition in 2009. Fast forward 15 years, and their early 30s have brought about remarkable growth in their music careers, with over 10 studio albums under their belts, including Christmas albums and tributes to renowned artists.
Reflecting on their time in Detroit, Barone mentions how instrumental it was in their career, serving as the genesis for Il Volo’s success on American soil. Fond memories of Detroit persist in their hearts, making each return visit a special occasion. The trio’s understanding of music, performances, and the industry has matured over the years. Boschetto remarks on the evolution in their vocal prowess, especially when it comes to singing arias and blending their voices harmoniously in various compositions. Ginoble adds that their journey has been a process of self-discovery, leading them to understand and hone their strengths better.
Il Volo has embarked on a current world tour scheduled until 2027, after which they plan to commence work on their next album and prepare for their 20th-anniversary celebrations. Amidst their packed schedules, they recently had the honor of serenading Pope Leo XIV last August during the Catholic Jubilee celebration in Rome. The trio was delighted by the Pope’s familiarity with them, adding another cherished memory to their illustrious career.
Il Volo will be performing at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on May 1, marking a significant homecoming for the group. Apart from their concert, several other notable music events will unfold in Detroit this weekend. Yungblud, a British rocker, will kick off the outdoor concert season at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre in Sterling Heights. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, led by Jader Bignamini, will perform Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” at Orchestra Hall. British pop sensation Calum Scott will grace the stage at the Fillmore Detroit, and other acts like Greensky Bluegrass, Biffy Clyro, and Melrose Avenue promise music enthusiasts a diverse range of performances across the city.
