Nun in Jerusalem bruised in racially motivated attack, man arrested

Jerusalem is a diverse city, home to various religious and ethnic groups, including Christians. Unfortunately, a recent incident has once again highlighted tensions between different communities in the city. Israeli police have taken a 36-year-old man into custody after a video surfaced showing him attacking a nun near Jerusalem’s Old City. This disturbing event is just one in a series of assaults targeting Christians in the area.

The attack took place near David’s Tomb, a revered site located outside Zion’s Gate. The nun, who was visibly bruised in the footage released by police, works as a researcher at the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research. Olivier Poquillon, the school’s director, condemned the assault as an “act of sectarian violence.” The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested “on suspicion of a racially motivated attack.”

The Old City, located in east Jerusalem, is steeped in history and contains significant religious sites for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Access and ownership of these sites have been sources of conflict, intertwined with the broader Israeli-Palestinian discord. Unfortunately, this incident is part of a troubling trend of harassment and violence against Christian pilgrims, clergy, and Palestinian Christian residents, often perpetrated by ultra-Orthodox Jewish yeshiva students.

Wadie Abunassar, coordinator of the Holy Land Christian Forum, expressed concern over the escalating attacks on Christians. He highlighted the lack of deterrence against such violence, noting that perpetrators are often not held accountable. This incident, however, saw swift action due to the video evidence capturing the assault.

The assault on the nun comes against the backdrop of increased scrutiny of Israel’s treatment of religious minorities. Recent restrictions on holiday worship access for Muslims and Christians, including Latin Patriarch’s Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, have drawn criticism. Additionally, an Israeli soldier faced backlash after desecrating a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon. Israeli authorities condemned the incident and promised disciplinary action against the soldier.

In response to this latest incident, Israeli police stated their commitment to protecting all communities in the city. They affirmed that those responsible for violence will be held accountable, reflecting the city’s significance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. This assault serves as a stark reminder of the need for unity and respect among the diverse religious groups that call Jerusalem home.
