Challenger arises for Kentucky Derby’s Mint Julep tradition
In preparation for the 152nd annual running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2, the well-known and long-standing tradition of sipping on a Mint Julep faces competition from a new bourbon cocktail making waves at Churchill Downs. The race is expected to draw substantial wagers, with projections reaching about $350 million on all the races, a significant portion of that sum flowing into the Derby race alone.
Renegade, the favorite this year, has stirred excitement despite drawing a challenging gate position, adding more anticipation to the iconic race. Churchill Downs anticipates hosting a crowd of over 150,000 attendees, with plans to serve upwards of 120,000 Mint Juleps. However, the introduction of the Woodford Reserve Spire cocktail in recent years has shaken up the event and promises to challenge the dominance of the classic Mint Julep.
The Mint Julep, crafted from 2 oz. bourbon, 0.5 oz. simple syrup, fresh mint leaves, and crushed ice, has been a staple at the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century, embodying the essence of the event. Arguably one of the most recognized bourbon-based cocktails in the world, the Mint Julep has remained synonymous with the Derby since the 1930s when it was crowned the official drink of the event.
While typically priced at $15 per serving, with special souvenir cups fetching even higher amounts, the Mint Julep has a rich history that goes back to the roots of Kentucky’s horse racing and bourbon industries. Chris Goodlett, the senior curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum, remarked on the long-standing connection between the Mint Julep, horse racing, and bourbon, stating, “It ties together two of Kentucky’s most well-known industries: horse racing and bourbon.”
On the other hand, the Woodford Reserve Spire, a new player in the Derby cocktail scene, has been making strides to win over attendees. Comprising Woodford Reserve Bourbon, lemonade, cranberry juice, and a lemon twist over crushed ice, this sweeter alternative has been rapidly gaining popularity since its introduction in 2018. Despite the Mint Julep’s enduring status as the classic choice, Elizabeth McCall, Master Distiller for Woodford Reserve, disclosed that sales of the Woodford Reserve Spire nearly rivaled those of the Mint Julep last year.
McCall delved into the historical roots of the Mint Julep, tracing its origins back to a time when the drink served as a morning remedy for those working in the horse racing industry. Over the course of history, the Mint Julep evolved from a simple concoction meant to alleviate daily aches to an enduring symbol of Southern hospitality and horse racing culture. McCall emphasized the importance of the Mint Julep in Derby traditions, noting that “Your Derby weekend should always include a mint julep. It is part of the history and tradition of the Kentucky Derby.”
As the Kentucky Derby approaches, the clash between the timeless Mint Julep and the up-and-coming Woodford Reserve Spire poses an intriguing duel between tradition and innovation at Churchill Downs.
