Increase in homelessness among elderly people

The recent findings for San Diego County in 2026 reveal a substantial decrease in homelessness in various communities, especially in East County. However, there is a concerning trend emerging with regards to senior homelessness. While the county’s unemployment rate is on a positive decline, surpassing the rate in California overall, the issue of homelessness among seniors is becoming more prevalent.

Every winter, numerous volunteers embark on a mission to conduct a census of individuals residing on the streets, in shelters, or in cars within their respective communities. Despite a minimal decrease of only 1% in the total homelessness count this year, following a more significant 7% decline in 2025, there are commendable improvements within the data. Notably, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of unsheltered homeless individuals transitioning off the streets. However, the data regarding individuals aged 55 and older raises red flags and demands immediate attention.

On the brighter side, positive developments can be observed in the suburbs and amongst veterans in terms of decreased homelessness. Yet, older individuals are facing distressing challenges that require urgent intervention. As highlighted by Thomas Murphy, the results of this year’s census serve as a stark warning signal for the growing crisis of homelessness among seniors in the region.

Significant efforts are being made to address the issue of homelessness, with volunteers and organizations working tirelessly to alleviate the plight of those in need. While there have been visible improvements in certain areas, the persistent rise in senior homelessness poses a critical concern that must be addressed promptly to ensure the well-being and dignity of aging individuals in our community.

In conclusion, while there have been positive strides in combatting homelessness in San Diego County, particularly in certain neighborhoods and among veterans, the escalating trend of senior homelessness demands immediate and focused attention. It is imperative for stakeholders, policymakers, and the community at large to come together to implement effective solutions that provide support and assistance to seniors experiencing homelessness, thereby preserving their dignity and ensuring their well-being in our society.
