This week, the New York Times featured mini puzzles created by Carole King, Diane Warren, and Stephin Merritt from the Magnetic Fields – all of whom are part of the hotly-debated list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters. Jeff Tweedy, while not making the list, had the opportunity to design a full-sized crossword for the Times’ monthly bonus game.

A self-proclaimed crossword fanatic, Tweedy has openly expressed his love for puzzles in his latest Substack update. He likened his addiction to crossword puzzles to a benign outlet for his addictive tendencies: “As an addict, you have to remind yourself that you’re still an addict, even when you’re aren’t doing things that are terrible for you.” His crossword puzzle, titled “My Life Was Saved By Rock ’N’ Roll,” features clues referencing iconic rock figures spanning various decades such as the Velvet Underground, Keith Richards, New York Dolls, Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Sex Pistols, and Bill Callahan. And, of course, there’s a nod to Wilco with at least one related clue.

In an interview with Times’ games editor Christina Iverson, Tweedy drew parallels between writing songs and crafting crosswords: “I think putting a song together and finding the right word to express what you want to say succinctly or with clarity, that can feel like putting a puzzle together sometimes.” Despite the similarities, he pointed out the key difference, noting that while there’s no definitive answer in songwriting, there’s always a correct solution in a crossword puzzle.

Tweedy’s crossword puzzle delves into his deep connection with rock ‘n’ roll music, intertwining his passion for words and music into an intricate game of clues and solutions. His references to rock legends from various eras provide a nostalgic journey for puzzle enthusiasts and music aficionados alike. The inclusion of influences like the Velvet Underground, David Bowie, and others reflects Tweedy’s profound appreciation for the genre and its enduring impact on his life and artistic journey.

Through his crossword creation, Tweedy showcases his versatile creativity and ability to engage with his audience through different mediums. The intertwining of music and puzzles offers a unique insight into his multifaceted talents and diverse interests. As fans and puzzle enthusiasts delve into “My Life Was Saved By Rock ’N’ Roll,” they are not only challenged intellectually but also invited to explore the rich tapestry of influences that have shaped Tweedy’s musical landscape.

Overall, Tweedy’s crossword puzzle serves as a testament to the enduring power of music and words in his life, intertwining two of his greatest passions into a captivating challenge for crossword aficionados and music lovers alike. It stands as a tribute to the timeless influence of rock ‘n’ roll and the creative spirit that drives Tweedy’s artistic endeavors, both in songwriting and puzzle design.
