It’s no secret that Scandinavia has earned its reputation as the spiritual home of melodic rock. The region boasts not only a significant number of bands but also an increasing array of festivals dedicated to or showcasing melodic acts. Last winter, the announcement of a new festival, Wings of AOR, piqued curiosity among fans, as it promised some unique ‘bucket list’ moments not found elsewhere. A diverse crowd, including many seasoned melodic rock enthusiasts from the UK, Europe, and the Americas, gathered for the event, underscoring the widespread appeal of this musical genre.

While not held in one of the major cities, Wings of AOR took place in Norrkoping, a charming town of around 100,000 residents located an hour and a half train ride from Stockholm. Reminiscent of Victorian cities with its elegant public buildings, Norrkoping exudes a sense of prosperity that dates back to the industrial boom of the 19th century. The festival venue, a stylish historic hall with grand ceilings and a spacious floor boasting a high stage, perfectly captured the town’s history and modern vibrancy. However, one minor complaint was the overly bold and at times disruptive lighting that sometimes left the bands performing in shadows.

Focused on quality rather than quantity, the festival showcased five bands each day, offering remarkably generous set lengths compared to typical festival standards. On the first day, the lineup featured Russ Ballard, Easy Action, Brian Spence, Gathering of Kings, and Daytona. The festivities kicked off with a warm introduction from stage announcer Stefan Johansson, a respected figure in the Swedish rock scene, urging attendees to appreciate both the classic and the contemporary.

Daytona, hailing from Sweden, had the honor of being the first band to grace the stage at Wings of AOR. Led by former Miss Behavior guitarist Erik Heikne, the band delivered a solid performance that blended classic AOR elements with their distinctive flair. Singer Frederik Werner’s powerful vocals, coupled with the band’s energetic stage presence, set a strong tone for the festival. As Daytona’s set progressed, their newer unreleased tracks like ‘No Exit Highway’ and ‘Listen to the Silence’ showcased their evolving songwriting abilities, hinting at promising future releases.

Gathering of Kings brought a different flavor to the festival with their melodic hard rock sound, highlighted by the impressive vocals of Tobias Jansson, Alexander Frisborg, and Jonny Lindqvist. The band’s unique concept of rotating lead singers added a dynamic element to their performance, captivating the audience with songs like ‘Long Way From Home’ and ‘A Rainbow and a Star.’ The singers’ distinct styles combined seamlessly on tracks like ‘Kiss From Above’ and ‘Vagabond Rise,’ creating a powerful musical tapestry on stage.

Next, Brian Spence, a legendary figure in the melodic rock scene, took the audience on a nostalgic journey with his timeless hits. Despite being less known today, Spence’s enduring charm and musical finesse shone through on tracks like ‘Brothers,’ ‘Love is the Glory,’ and ‘Gandhi.’ His band’s soulful renditions and Celtic-inspired arrangements transported listeners back to the golden era of AOR, evoking a sense of nostalgia and admiration for the artist’s legacy. Songs like ‘I Still Don’t Know’ and ‘Falling in Love in a Foreign Land’ showcased Spence’s songwriting prowess and enduring appeal to fans old and new.
