Outrage and investigation sparked by video of rock thrown at Hawaiian monk seal
A disturbing video capturing a man throwing a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal off the coast of Maui has caused widespread outrage and rekindled the conversation about maintaining a safe distance from these endangered animals. The incident unfolded on Front Street in Lahaina, where onlookers observed a couple approaching a resting monk seal despite warnings to keep away.
The video footage shows bystanders questioning the actions of the couple just moments before the man in question hurled a sizable rock towards the seal. Witness Kaylee Schnitzer, 18, described the rock as large as a coconut, aimed directly at the seal’s head. Shocked by what she had seen, Schnitzer and another witness promptly contacted the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) while observing the distressed seal seeking refuge on nearby rocks.
Monk seals are protected under state and federal law, with regulations requiring people to maintain a minimum distance of 50 feet from these animals. Violations of these rules can result in fines and possibly even imprisonment. The dissemination of the video footage has triggered a wave of emotions throughout Hawaii, especially following the recent birth of a well-known monk seal named Kaiwi at Kaimana Beach in Oahu.
Local resident Steve Ostroff expressed frustration at people who fail to respect nature, stating, “There are just people who just don’t get it. They don’t respect nature. Shame on them.” Similarly, Nelson Chauncey from Waimanalo highlighted the disconnect some visitors may have with local wildlife protection guidelines, noting that tourists may not fully grasp the significance of these rules in preserving their habitat.
Reflecting on the incident, Schnitzer expressed a mix of emotions, from sadness to a desire to intervene. She emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for their actions, showing concern for the well-being of the distressed seal. DLNR officials confirmed that the individual seen in the video has not been apprehended and is currently under investigation.
Jason Redulla, chief of DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, mentioned that the ongoing investigation involves collecting statements and evidence, with plans to involve NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement for potential federal action. Individuals witnessing any form of wildlife harassment or similar incidents are encouraged to report such behavior to the DLNR’s enforcement hotline.
As the investigation continues, it is essential to emphasize the significance of respecting marine life and abiding by regulations put in place to protect these vulnerable species. Maintaining a safe distance and refraining from any form of harassment are vital steps towards ensuring the preservation of the Hawaiian monk seal population.
