Student filmmakers to present films at Slick Rock festival in Visalia

Student filmmakers from various schools in the Central Valley are gearing up to display their creative endeavors at the upcoming Tulare County Office of Education Slick Rock Student Film Festival. Scheduled to be held at the Visalia Fox Theatre on Friday, May 8, this festival promises a diverse selection of cinematic works to be showcased to the public, free of charge.

The festival kicks off with the Premiere Cut screening starting at 9 a.m., where a total of 174 out of the 483 entered films will be sequentially presented. This viewing session runs until 3 p.m., following which the theater closes temporarily to prepare for the awards ceremony. As students begin to arrive in style by limousines around 5 p.m., the doors are opened to the public, leading up to the commencement of the program at 6 p.m.

Notably, the impressive lineup of films represents the collaborative effort of over 1,000 students hailing from 50 different schools across Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Kern, and Madera counties. The vast majority of submissions, 407 films, fall under the high school category, with the remaining 76 entries categorized as middle school submissions.

According to Rob Herman, the public information officer at the Tulare County Office of Education, the festival will feature a total of 16 awards, including distinct recognitions such as best overall film for both high school and middle school entries. Films cover a wide array of categories, ranging from animation to nutrition/physical activity PSAs, emphasizing the importance of meeting industry standards in film production.

The Slick Rock Student Film Festival serves as an annual platform that encourages young filmmakers to hone their skills and showcase their talents to a wider audience.
