Miyajimanuma Waterfowl and Wetland Center hosts invasive species removal activity and spring event
The Miyajimanuma Waterfowl and Wetland Center in Bibai City is hosting an event to remove invasive species and observe spring plants on May 9th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The center aims to tackle the invasive alien species Oohangonsou, a yellow flower that thrives in cold and wet conditions and has spread throughout Japan. Despite Miyajimanuma being recognized under the Ramsar Convention for over 20 years, Oohangonsou has proliferated in the area, including within the center’s premises. To combat this, the center has been actively removing Oohangonsou from the observation area since 2021 and will provide a comprehensive lecture on how to identify this invasive species, making it accessible even for beginners.
The removal activity is open to all, although children below the 3rd grade of elementary school must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are advised to wear comfortable attire that can get dirty, such as long sleeves, long pants, and rubber boots, as well as bring work gloves, a hat, drinks, a towel, and optional tools like shovels or digging implements. The participation fee for insurance is 100 yen per person, and attendees should visit the official website for the most up-to-date information about the event.
The event will take place at the Miyajimanuma Waterfowl and Wetland Center, organized by 宮島沼水鳥・湿地センター. The center’s initiative to engage the community in invasive species removal highlights their commitment to environmental conservation and preserving the unique ecosystem of Miyajimanuma. This event not only offers a hands-on experience in environmental stewardship but also educates participants on the importance of native plant species and the impact of invasive flora on local biodiversity.
In conclusion, the Miyajimanuma Waterfowl and Wetland Center’s “Invasive Species Removal Activity & Spring Plant Mini-Observation Session” provides a valuable opportunity for individuals of all ages to contribute to environmental preservation while enjoying the natural beauty of the wetlands. By participating in this event, attendees can learn about the threats posed by invasive species and actively engage in conservation efforts to protect the delicate balance of Miyajimanuma’s ecosystem. Don’t miss this chance to make a positive impact on the environment and immerse yourself in the wonders of wetland conservation.
