The mystery of a missing person that had remained unsolved for over 50 years has finally been resolved after the discovery of a set of remains in Texas that were identified as belonging to a San Francisco woman who went missing in 1973.

The San Francisco Police Department revealed that Cheryl Lanier, a 27-year-old woman who had disappeared from the Bay Area in 1973, was positively identified through DNA evidence. Although the missing person report for Lanier was filed in 2010, her case remained open and unresolved until this recent breakthrough.

After 37 years, investigators received a critical lead in July 2025 when the police in Harris County, Texas, alerted them to a deceased Jane Doe who had passed away three years after Lanier went missing. This prompted a joint effort between law enforcement agencies in Houston and California to delve further into the case using DNA analysis, which eventually confirmed the identity of the Jane Doe as Cheryl Lanier, closing the case that had remained a mystery for half a century.

The Houston Police Department reported that Lanier had tragically passed away on September 30, 1976, just three years after she was last seen alive in San Francisco. Two days before her death, Lanier had a harrowing encounter on the side of Interstate 10, where a truck driver encountered her asking for a ride. Despite his refusal, Lanier insisted on getting into the truck, warning the driver of an impending explosion. Ultimately, she jumped out of the moving vehicle, leading to her injuries and subsequent death in a Houston hospital.

Though the truck driver and witnesses present on that fateful day have since passed away, investigators indicated an inability to locate any records of a third witness. This case is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across multiple states, including the NYPD and the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina, who worked together to unravel the mystery surrounding Cheryl Lanier’s disappearance and death.

The San Francisco Police Department expressed its condolences to Lanier’s family and friends, bringing a sense of closure to a decades-old missing person case that had lingered unresolved. While details surrounding the circumstances of Lanier’s disappearance and eventual demise remain scarce, the identification of her remains serves as a bittersweet conclusion to a long-standing investigation that has finally brought answers to a family searching for closure after more than five decades.
