Death on DIA runway raises concerns about security and safety in Denver
Safety and security concerns have been raised following a tragic incident at Denver International Airport where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a departing Frontier flight after trespassing onto the airport property. Newly surfaced security video footage provides a harrowing glimpse of the moment Frontier Airlines flight 4345 collided with a pedestrian on the active runway.
The incident occurred on Friday night, as the Airbus A320 was departing for Los Angeles International Airport. The plane reported hitting a pedestrian while taking off at approximately 11:19 p.m. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, had apparently breached a perimeter fence and managed to access the runway, where they were struck by the aircraft, with reports indicating they were partially consumed by one of the engines.
Aviation experts have expressed concerns over the ease with which individuals can access restricted airfield spaces. Jeff Price, an aviation security expert and professor at Metro State University Denver, highlighted the vulnerabilities of airport fencing, noting that barriers are primarily designed to delay and deter potential intruders rather than completely prevent unauthorized access. The incident has underscored the need for robust security measures to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
Upon impact, the pilot immediately contacted the control tower, reporting the collision and an engine fire. Passengers onboard the flight felt a sudden jolt as the plane accelerated down the runway. Following the collision, the aircraft filled with smoke, prompting an emergency evacuation using slides deployed on the runway. Twelve passengers sustained minor injuries, with five requiring hospitalization.
The incident has prompted questions regarding the detection technology used on DIA’s airfield and whether perimeter intrusion systems are in place to monitor unauthorized access. While some airports utilize advanced systems to detect intrusions on runways, it remains unclear whether DIA has similar measures in place. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a review of the evacuation procedures following the incident to assess compliance with safety standards.
Airport authorities have described the incident as a “horrible and preventable tragedy” and emphasized their commitment to prioritizing safety. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of maintaining stringent security protocols and implementing effective measures to prevent unauthorized access to restricted airport areas. Efforts to enhance security and mitigate the risks of similar incidents are crucial in safeguarding the well-being of passengers, airport personnel, and the public.
