Tori Amos talks about her challenging menopause, peaceful life in Cornwall, and energetic tours: ‘I’m all about rock’n’roll’
Tori Amos, a red-headed American singer-songwriter, is basking in the glory of her rock’n’roll lifestyle at the age of 62, which she humorously refers to as “59 plus three”. With the recent release of her 18th album and indulging in afterparties that end at 4am while on tour, Tori is truly living the dream that many aspire to. Embarking on her biggest European tour in ten years this spring and summer followed by a series of US shows, Tori is set to perform a mix of iconic tracks from her extensive repertoire, including hits like Cornflake Girl and Professional Widow, as well as songs from her latest album, In Times of Dragons.
Tackling the challenges of menopause head-on, Tori describes this phase of her life as a “trial by fire”, one that she overcame with the help of medical intervention. Reflecting on her struggles during menopause, Tori shares, “I reached out for help and I got that help because my levels weren’t balanced, affecting both my physical well-being and my ability to make clear decisions. If you don’t address these imbalances, it can feel like you’re losing your mind. But once you emerge on the other side, you transform into what I like to call a chill hottie.”
Speaking from her home in Cornwall, where she was rehearsing for her tour, Tori expresses her excitement about hitting the road again. With a newfound range in her voice due to the deepening caused by menopause, Tori is embracing the changes by incorporating backing singers for the higher notes in her songs, adapting to her current vocal capabilities. Life on tour for Tori is a whirlwind of activity, with late-night suppers, red wine shared with her crew from the bus’s wine cellar, and early mornings filled with travel to the next destination.
At Tori’s side throughout her journey is her husband of 28 years, Mark Hawley, a sound engineer who has been a steadfast supporter since their initial meeting in the Nineties. When not on tour, Tori enjoys a serene life in North Cornwall, surrounded by picturesque landscapes that inspire her creativity. In her beachside home in Florida, Tori’s great nieces have dubbed it Fairy Beach, where they leave letters for fairies, keeping the magic alive.
Tori’s latest album serves as an allegory of present-day America, illustrating a fictionalized version of herself navigating a metaphorical fight for democracy. With vocals by her daughter Natashya Hawley, the album delves into themes of power and society. Looking ahead, Tori plans to take a well-deserved break with Mark after the tour, reflecting on the blessings of being able to tour at 62 and expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of her fans throughout her musical career.
