Triumph is gearing up for its long-awaited reunion tour, with a scheduled performance at Frost Bank Center on Thursday, May 21. The Canadian rock band, known for hits like “Lay It on the Line,” “Magic Power,” and “Blinding Light Show,” has a special connection with San Antonio, where they first made waves in the United States half a century ago.

Back in 1977, Triumph’s debut performance in San Antonio was a pivotal moment that marked their first U.S. auditorium date. The group quickly gained popularity in the Alamo City, becoming a favorite among locals during the era dominated by Joe Anthony and Stone City Attractions.

Speaking with original members Rik Emmett and Gil Moore on Zoom, along with current guitarist Phil X, shed light on the band’s journey from humble beginnings to their upcoming reunion tour. Despite facing an acrimonious breakup in the ’90s, Triumph’s legacy lives on, and their return to the stage is sure to excite fans old and new.

Original bassist Mike Levine reflected on San Antonio’s role in the band’s rise, highlighting a special moment when they received an award at the Alamo in the ’80s. As Levine recalled, San Antonio was like a second home to Triumph, and the city played a significant part in their success.

For those unfamiliar with Triumph, the band’s sound is rooted in the classic hard rock of the ’70s and ’80s, blending elements of blues, folk rock, and prog. Moore and Emmett’s songwriting and vocal talents complemented each other, with Emmett’s melodic tunes contrasting Moore’s energetic rock anthems.

From their debut album “In The Beginning” to hits like “Rock & Roll Machine” and “Allied Forces,” Triumph’s repertoire showcased their musical versatility and prowess. Despite the changing landscape of rock music in the ’80s, Triumph stayed true to their larger-than-life performances, complete with pyrotechnics and laser shows that wowed audiences.

As the ’80s drew to a close, internal tensions led to Emmett’s departure from the band, sparking a prolonged legal battle and subsequent disbandment. While each member pursued individual endeavors, Triumph’s impact on rock music continued to resonate with fans around the world.

Now, with their reunion tour on the horizon, Triumph is set to bring their iconic sound back to the stage, rekindling the magic that captivated audiences decades ago. The anticipation is high as fans eagerly await the chance to see this legendary band live once again, proving that the spirit of rock and roll never truly dies.
