Portuguese city explores circular economy solutions for automotive industry
The automotive industry is progressively moving towards implementing circular economy practices, yet there is still much ground to cover, according to an innovation manager at the University of Coimbra (UC). Despite the availability of various recycling technologies, the adoption of sustainable practices remains a work in progress.
To encourage dialogue and collaboration among academia, businesses, and stakeholders in the automotive sector, an event titled “Pact for the Circular Economy – Automotive Sector” is scheduled for May 23. The initiative, organized by the Porsche Coimbra Service Centre and UC, aims to showcase innovative and sustainable solutions developed within UC, promoting awareness and adoption in the automotive industry.
While certain recycling processes, such as tire recycling, are widely known and established, others like automotive glass still face challenges due to their novelty and technological limitations. Areas such as lubricating oils, batteries for electric vehicles, bioplastics, and vehicle textiles are also under development, emphasizing the industry’s shift towards sustainability.
The innovation manager highlighted the existing technologies for circular economy practices in the automotive sector and acknowledged the need for further development and implementation. Margarida Anastácio underlined the importance of exploring solutions for glass, textiles, and plastics recycling, stressing that these topics would be at the core of discussions during the May 23 meeting.
The event will serve as a platform to showcase the outcomes and advancements of research and innovation projects undertaken by UC, aligning with the objectives of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). By bringing together key stakeholders and highlighting ongoing initiatives, the event aims to foster greater collaboration and accelerate the integration of circular economy practices in the automotive sector, paving the way for more sustainable and environmentally-friendly processes.
In conclusion, the journey towards a circular economy in the automotive industry is a collaborative effort that requires continued engagement, innovation, and awareness. Through initiatives like the “Pact for the Circular Economy – Automotive Sector,” stakeholders can leverage existing technologies, share knowledge, and drive positive change towards a more sustainable future.
