Video captures Fairfield officer punching high school student in the face
Videos circulating on social media showing a Fairfield police officer body slamming, punching, and pulling the hair of a Fairfield High School student has sparked concern and outrage among various onlookers. The incident unfolded during an arrest on the school campus around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, as stated in a Fairfield police press release issued on Thursday. Additional body camera footage from the arresting officers was also released by the police department in response to the incident.
The police officers were called to the school to respond to a fight between two students, and Officer James Lewis was shown taking one of the students to a school office in the body camera footage. Upon closing the office door, Lewis shifted his attention to another student connected to the altercation. The student attempted to retreat from Lewis, who encouraged him to “chill out” and “relax” while detaining him with his hands positioned behind his back. In the midst of escorting the student out of the school, the situation escalated when the student abruptly pulled away from Lewis and turned toward him.
Officer Bianca Brown, who was hastening to join Lewis, seized the student and forcefully slammed him to the ground. According to the police press release, the student was exemplifying aggressive behaviors that warranted the use of physical force. Recorded by bystanders and also evident in the body camera footage, Brown straddled the student and delivered repeated punches to his face and head while grabbing his hair in a tug-of-war motion.
The Fairfield police justified Brown’s actions as “distraction strikes” necessary to contain the student. The footage illustrates the student shielding his face from the blows, while Brown demanded the student to comply by saying, “give me your f****** hands.” The police report verified that Brown’s actions were an attempt to subdue the student who was resisting. Brown prompted Lewis to assist in handcuffing the student by kneeling beside him and vocalizing “cuffs” repetitively.
As the officers were escorting the student out of the high school premises, Brown was observed pulling the student’s hair once again. Both students involved in the altercation were placed under arrest following the incident. The parents of the student involved have been advocating for attention to be drawn to the matter on their social media platforms. In a video documented by one of the parents, a question was raised towards Brown about the use of excessive force, which she defended as necessary to overcome resistance during the arrest.
Councilmember K. Patrice Williams highlighted her immediate response upon viewing the video and notified Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall of her concerns. The situation is currently being reviewed by the authorities. Civil rights attorney Melisa Nold expressed her apprehensions regarding the incident, categorizing it as a misuse of force. According to Nold, the videos depicted an excessive use of force by law enforcement which raises significant questions about the proportionality of the actions taken during the arrest.
