Annual jazz festival makes a comeback in Portuguese city
Jazz enthusiasts can anticipate the return of the MeaJazz festival in July, promising an even more enriched experience this year. The festival, scheduled to take place at the Luso Lake Garden in Mealhada, is set to feature exceptional performances by artists like Luís Martelo, Peter Storm, and Tó Trips.
According to António Jorge Franco, the Mayor of Mealhada, MeaJazz has progressively evolved to offer both national and international artists, attracting crowds not only from various regions within Portugal but also from overseas. The festival stands out for its vibrant atmosphere, offering a unique blend of jazz and blues alongside wine tasting in a picturesque outdoor setting.
The event will showcase emerging jazz talents and well-known musicians, creating a platform to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region. With an investment of approximately 100,000 euros, MeaJazz promises to deliver a stellar lineup, including renowned trumpeter Luís Martelo, known for his musical roots in Barcouço.
Pedro Galhoz, the festival’s curator, emphasized the goal of MeaJazz to transcend traditional jazz boundaries and embrace diverse musical genres while staying true to jazz’s origins. The focus is on broadening the festival’s audience base, inviting families to partake in the festivities.
The lineup for July 3 includes performances by Peter Storm & The Blues Society and Tó Trips & Fake Latinos, while the following day will feature Portuguese saxophonist Cabrita and Brazilian artist Mirla Riomar. To conclude the event, Frankie Chavez will grace the stage at the Parque do Lago do Luso.
MeaJazz attendees can look forward to the festival’s signature street entertainment by Desbundixie and a “Wine Fest” experience in partnership with Rota da Bairrada, offering a range of tasting opportunities. Vice-Mayor Filomena Pinheiro underscored the festival’s journey since its relocation to Luso, emphasizing the synergy between culture, nature, and overall well-being.
MeaJazz aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment, harmonizing the serene beauty of Luso with captivating musical performances. The Municipality of Mealhada is committed to involving young musicians and local schools, fostering an environment for artistic discovery and cultivating new talent.
With the natural amphitheater in Luso expected to accommodate between five to ten thousand attendees, the festival ensures free admission for all music lovers. MeaJazz stands as a testament to the vibrant jazz scene in Portugal, promising an unforgettable experience for jazz enthusiasts of all ages.
