Annual Chimney Rock Festival to Take Place on June 6 & 7

The annual Life at Chimney Rock Festival, organized by the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA), is set to take place on June 6 and 7 at the Chimney Rock National Monument. This event, celebrating the rich cultural history of the Ancient Puebloans, promises a variety of engaging activities for attendees.

One of the highlights of the festival is the opportunity for families and history enthusiasts to partake in interactive demonstrations led by CRIA volunteers. These demonstrations include hands-on activities like pounding yucca, creating coil pottery, making rock art, weaving, corn grinding, and learning how to throw a spear using an atlatl. These activities offer a glimpse into the daily lives and skills of the Ancients, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation of their cultural practices.

In addition to the hands-on activities, guests can also explore topics like astronomy, flint knapping, dendrochronology, and sample traditional foods such as Anasazi beans. Food vendors will be present, offering a variety of lunch options and drinks to keep attendees energized throughout the day.

Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to browse and purchase artwork from talented artists representing different Native American cultures at the Native American Market. These vendors, showcasing pottery, jewelry, paintings, wood carvings, and more, will also be offering demonstrations of their craft, providing visitors with insights into their creative processes.

Furthermore, the festival will feature captivating Native American dance performances by the Fragua Family from Jemez Pueblo and the Roach Family Dancers from Gallup, New Mexico. These performances offer a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions and storytelling of Native American tribes.

Thanks to a waiver of the daily activity fee by the U.S. Forest Service, visitors can enjoy free access to the festival and explore the Chimney Rock National Monument’s amenities. This includes self-guided tours of cultural sites, nature trails, and the Visitor Plaza, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the history and natural beauty of the Monument.

The Chimney Rock Interpretive Association encourages everyone to join the festivities and celebrate the legacy of the Ancestral Puebloans at the Life at Chimney Rock Festival.
