CJ Ramone Discusses Punk Rock, Podcasts, Introversion, and Carrying on the Ramones Legacy
J Ramone, it all began with a simple act: showing up early.
In our exclusive C² spotlight, CJ shared his experience auditioning for the legendary Ramones, joining one of the most iconic punk bands in history, dealing with the pressure of living up to their legacy, and how being introverted became a strength for him.
Transitioning from the Marine Corps to the Ramones was a significant move for CJ. Initially, he never thought he had a shot at the gig, given his background as a finger-style bass player influenced by Iron Maiden and classic punk. However, he made sure to bring picks to the audition, knowing it would be career suicide to show up without them. Despite his doubts, he impressed Johnny Ramone by confidently playing “I Wanna Be Sedated,” which kickstarted his journey with the band.
Unlike many who would try to fill Dee Dee Ramone’s shoes, CJ never attempted to imitate him. Before joining the band, he expressed that he would never attend another Ramones show because they wouldn’t be the same without Dee Dee. Ironically, he ended up playing every remaining Ramones show until they retired, embracing his unique energy rather than copying his predecessor.
CJ’s discipline and reliability, qualities he carried from his military background, made him the right fit for the Ramones. Johnny Ramone recognized these traits among the sea of auditioning bass players, choosing CJ for his stability and mission-oriented mindset. Despite the weight of the Ramones’ legacy, CJ strives to preserve the band’s history through interviews, live performances, and his podcast, CJ Says.
Through his podcast, CJ delves deep into punk rock, offering real conversations with industry legends and breaking down Ramones albums track-by-track. As someone who was once introverted, CJ’s advice resonates with those who feel like outsiders. Embracing one’s interests fully, as CJ did with music, literature, and astronomy, can lead to finding like-minded individuals and building genuine connections.
Reflecting on the best advice he ever received, CJ recalls a high school teacher who encouraged him not to squander his talent. This sentiment continues to guide his approach to creativity and storytelling, driving his passion for music even after all these years. By staying humble, honest, and passionate, CJ remains true to the fan within him while contributing to the punk rock scene as CJ Ramone.
Whether through his music, podcast, or live performances, CJ Ramone upholds the Ramones’ legacy with integrity, offering fans a raw and authentic experience that honors the band’s storied history.
