Thingamajig Theatre Company kicks off its 2026 Summer Repertory Season this Friday, May 29, with the premiere of “Come From Away,” the first production in the “Broadway in the Mountains” summer series.

The renowned musical “Come From Away,” written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is inspired by the true events that unfolded in the Newfoundland town of Gander after the 9/11 attacks. During that week, 38 aircraft carrying around 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander International Airport, leading to unexpected landings.

The musical’s characters are based on real Gander residents and the stranded travelers they accommodated and provided sustenance for during those uncertain times. The heartwarming and humorous narrative reflects the spirit of generosity and compassion during moments of crisis.

‘Come From Away’ received acclaim at the 71st Tony Awards, garnering seven nominations and winning the award for Best Direction of a Musical for Christopher Ashley. Likewise, it received nine nominations at the 2019 Laurence Olivier Awards and won three, including the esteemed Best New Musical title.

Embracing themes of kindness and camaraderie during adversity, the musical captivates audiences with its touching and relatable storyline. The show promises to evoke a range of emotions, from laughter to tears, as it celebrates the resilience and empathy of humanity.
