Bandai has recently announced an exciting collaboration between the iconic tokusatsu series Ultraman and their classic Digimon virtual pet franchise to celebrate a significant milestone. This partnership will introduce a special edition of the “Digital Monster COLOR” handheld device that incorporates classic tokusatsu elements, creating a unique and engaging experience for fans of both franchises.

The collaboration comes as Ultraman marks its 60th anniversary, a momentous occasion for a series that has long been a defining presence in the Japanese special effects genre. Similarly, the Digital Monster line has entertained fans for decades, making this crossover event a significant meeting of two historic pop culture brands.

Initially created by Bandai to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the virtual pet brand, the “Digital Monster COLOR” devices have been recreated with modern hardware that faithfully replicates the classic aesthetic and design of the original 1997 release. The upgraded device features a vibrant color LCD screen that brings pixelated sprites to life, replacing the old monochrome display. Additionally, users will no longer need to replace small watch batteries, as the device includes a built-in rechargeable battery with a modern USB Type-C charging port.

The software has been updated to include several quality-of-life adjustments tailored for busy enthusiasts who want to raise their digital companions on the go. A dedicated Sleep Mode allows players to pause their companion’s needs temporarily during busy hours, while a specialized Backup System enables users to store a monster’s current state, allowing for easy rotation between raising different characters on a single unit.

Following the success of similar crossovers, like the recent Godzilla x Digimon Pendulum COLOR Devices, fans can look forward to nurturing Ultraman heroes and legendary kaiju monsters within the digital space. The internal software roster may even introduce new crossover characters that blend design elements from both universes, offering a fresh and exciting experience for players.

Bandai plans to release specific launch dates, pricing details, and a complete character listing as development progresses. This collaboration marks a unique and special opportunity for fans to engage with their favorite characters from both franchises in a compelling and immersive digital experience.
