De Staat announces new album and releases fiery single ‘THE FIRE’
De Staat has made a triumphant return with the announcement of their highly anticipated seventh studio album titled DE STAAT (THE STATE), signifying a bold new era for the revered Dutch art-rock pioneers after a two-year break. Scheduled to drop on 18th September through V2 Records, the eponymous record accompanies the band’s powerful new single, THE FIRE, a provocative and politically charged track that delves into themes of anxiety, misinformation, and societal unrest that have long been central to the group’s artistic expression.
Following April’s release of the comeback single THE KING, which hinted at De Staat’s resurgence, THE FIRE takes their exploration of complacency and modern disconnection to new heights. Frontman Torre Florim dives deep into themes of inaction amidst global chaos, delivering incisive lyrics over pulsating rhythms and edgy industrial beats. The track critically examines the tendency to passively observe worldwide crises from a detached standpoint, encapsulating the desensitization of contemporary digital culture where tragedies seem distant and unreal through screens.
Florim elaborates that the album’s title holds evolving significance over the band’s 25-year journey. While De Staat has consistently probed themes of power dynamics, manipulation, and belief systems, the current political landscape has lent newfound immediacy to their exploration of these concepts. According to Florim, the band’s name now feels like a foretelling of their trajectory towards grappling with these weighty themes artistically.
Sonically, THE FIRE continues De Staat’s bold experimentation, solidifying their reputation as one of Europe’s most innovative alternative acts. Their ability to blend jagged art-rock, electronic elements, heavy grooves, and infectious melodies has distinguished them as one of the continent’s most unpredictable live performers.
In conjunction with the album release, the band is embarking on a cutting-edge multimedia project named De Staat Becomes De Staat. This immersive live experience has been crafted in collaboration with esteemed visual artists, directors, and designers, promising a dystopian and all-encompassing theatrical production that expands upon the album’s themes of power structures and societal fractures.
Over the years, De Staat has cultivated a devoted global fan base through dynamic festival showcases at prestigious events like Glastonbury, SXSW, and Sziget, as well as sharing stages with renowned acts such as The Rolling Stones, Muse, and Biffy Clyro. With DE STAAT (THE STATE), the band seems poised to channel their restless energy into their most urgent and politically resonant work yet.
