Albert Castiglia Reveals Upcoming Album ‘Grits & Glory’
A seasoned blues musician and recipient of multiple Blues Music Awards, Albert Castiglia, has unveiled his latest solo album, “Grits & Glory,” under Gulf Coast Records. This musical piece, recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, encapsulates a full-circle moment for Albert, reconnecting him with his fervent, guitar-wielding self from Miami, inspired by the transformative experience of listening to Rubber Soul on an 8-track on his way to a game. This curiosity drove him to explore the sounds and musicians across the pond, such as Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page, leaving an indelible mark on his musical journey. The album, in essence, is an American bluesman’s expedition to London, bridging the blues traditions from both sides of the Atlantic.
Albert’s artistic vision was ignited during a European tour in 2023, sparking a conversation with Olly Overton from Gulf Coast Records about recording in Britain. The album’s themes were carefully crafted to reflect on Albert’s journey so far and his present state amidst the cacophony in America, seeking solace and contemplation. By choosing to record in England, he found the creative liberty he yearned for. Albert was steadfast in his decision to record “Grits & Glory” with his trusted road band, comprising Cliff Moore on bass and Ray Hangen on drums, marking their debut recording under the ACB banner. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place with producer Dave Gross, an experienced ally with an extensive knowledge of Abbey Road and a history of collaboration with Albert.
Following the green light from the label, Abbey Road Studios became the solely envisioned location for the recording sessions. Before entering the studio, Albert immersed himself in British musical heritage, paying homage to Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi in Birmingham. This pilgrimage carried additional significance following the passing of Ozzy Osbourne. Subsequently, in London, the album took shape under the banner of “Grits & Glory,” embodying a raw and unfiltered essence of Albert Castiglia, enriched with British blues flavors. The final outcome was a potent concoction of history, passion, and a tenacious spirit that demands to be experienced and embraced.
The tracklist for the album includes a diverse range of compositions, such as “In My America,” “Michigan Avenue,” “Slumlord Billionaire,” and “Afro Blue,” reflecting Albert’s musical evolution and inspirations. “Grits & Glory” stands as a testament to Albert Castiglia’s enduring passion for the blues and his ability to infuse it with a dynamic and vibrant spirit, resonating with the legacy of the genre while charting new territories in his musical odyssey.
