Explore the historic Pink House in Woodstock at no cost

On June 6, Roseland Cottage in Woodstock will be offering complimentary tours, marking Historic New England’s Open House day. Hourly tours are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the final tour commencing at 3 p.m., which will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Locally known as The Pink House, this National Historic Landmark epitomizes the Gothic Revival style that was prevalent in the 1840s. Built as the summer residence for 19th-century businessman and abolitionist Henry Chandler Bowen and his wife Lucy Tappan, Roseland Cottage boasts a rich history with notable visitors, including U.S. presidents. The property features distinctive elements like the original boxwood parterre garden meticulously planted with over 5,000 annuals each spring. Additionally, it houses an icehouse, aviary, carriage barn, and the oldest surviving indoor bowling alley in the nation.

The interiors of The Pink House are lavishly decorated with ornate wall coverings, intricately patterned carpets, stained glass, and furniture all adhering to the Gothic Revival aesthetic from its construction in 1846. To enhance the visitor experience, Roseland Cottage will also be hosting a series of free Twilight Lawn Concerts throughout the summer.

The musical lineup includes performances by The Little Big Band on June 26, Souls on Fire on July 10, and Wooden Horse on Aug. 21, all starting at 6:30 p.m. These concerts offer a unique opportunity to enjoy live music amidst the historic ambiance of The Pink House.

Furthermore, visitors on June 28 from noon to 4 p.m. can partake in Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day with a special tour of the parterre garden. Participants will have the chance to create a miniature garden in a teacup, bringing their own cup or using one provided on-site. Roseland Cottage will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday from June 4 to Oct. 18. Tours are free for Woodstock residents and Historic New England members.
