“Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Californication’ Album Re-Enters Billboard Charts After 27 Years”
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ iconic album “Californication” has made a remarkable resurgence on the Billboard charts, 27 years after its initial release in 1999. The album, which features hit songs like “Scar Tissue,” “Otherside,” and the title track “Californication,” returned to the music scene during the week of June 6, reaching the 179th position on the Billboard Hot 200. Additionally, it claimed the 44th spot on Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart.
Frontman Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers revealed some interesting details about the creation of the album during a SiriusXM show in February 2025. Kiedis shared that he had penned some of the lyrics for “Californication” while the band was on a break. According to Kiedis, the melody and lyrics of the song seemed to come to him as if they were being transmitted from another realm while he was visiting New Zealand.
Recalling his experience, Kiedis mentioned, “I would stop like on the stoop of different buildings. And I just started writing stuff down and singing the melody over and over and over in my head, ’cause I didn’t want to forget it.” When Kiedis returned to Los Angeles, guitarist John Frusciante, who had previously left the band in the early ’90s, rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kiedis and Frusciante collaborated on perfecting “Californication,” a process that took time and effort.
Kiedis described their creative process, saying, “John rejoins and is in a really interesting headspace, and he and I start hanging out late at night around ashtrays and record players, guitars, and writing some songs, which felt good. Like we were both broken and willing and eager to get back into that special something.” The frontman recounted playing the song to Frusciante, who struggled initially to find the right musical accompaniment to match the lyrics and melody of “Californication.”
Eventually, after the rest of the album was recorded, Frusciante had a breakthrough. Kiedis reminisced, “We finished our record, and we were just crossing the Ts and dotting the Is at the very end, and he came bursting in through the back door of the studio, where he had been outside with his electric guitar playing acoustically. And he said, ‘I got it, I got it, I got it, I got it!'”
