New video released in fatal incident on Tucson’s Miracle Mile

The recently disclosed body-worn camera footage portrays the events that unfolded before a fatal incident occurred on Tucson’s west side in April. This footage originates from April 4 in the vicinity of Miracle Mile and Fairview Avenue, where officers from the Tucson Police Department were summoned in response to reports of a man hurling rocks at vehicles. Subsequently, the man began inflicting harm upon himself with a sharp object as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation using non-lethal methods.

The episode commenced right before 7 p.m. when two Tucson police officers were engaged in an unrelated matter at the Target store on North Oracle Road. At the time, a man approached them and conveyed statements that, while unusual, did not appear to be of a criminal nature. Following this encounter, the man departed from the scene. Shortly thereafter, the same individual dialed 911 to report being followed and threatened in the vicinity of the 3300 block of North Oracle Road. A patrol officer promptly arrived at the location and engaged with the caller, subsequently identified as 40-year-old Jesus Tapia.

During the interaction, Tapia conversed briefly with the officer but experienced difficulty in being understood. No evident criminal infractions were observed during this encounter, and Tapia did not solicit any further assistance before departing the area on foot. Later on, an alert driver drew the attention of the aforementioned officer, reporting a person initiating rock-throwing episodes at passing vehicles on Miracle Mile. Additional officers were promptly enlisted upon establishing that Tapia was the individual responsible for these actions.

Upon the arrival of the officers at Tapia’s location and their departure from their patrol vehicles, Tapia brandished a box cutter and proceeded to launch multiple rocks at a patrol vehicle, leading to the shattering of a window. In response, the officers issued repeated commands for Tapia to desist from throwing rocks and to comply with their directives. Despite their initial attempts to manage the situation, the encounter tragically culminated in a fatal outcome.

The newly disclosed footage provides a sobering account of the circumstances that transpired during this incident, shedding light on the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers in managing high-risk encounters. These events underscore the importance of effective communication, de-escalation techniques, and swift decision-making in safeguarding the well-being of both officers and civilians during critical incidents such as this one.
