Lead commentator replaced by Sky Sports F1 after missing Barcelona GP for festival
Sky Sports F1’s lead commentator, David Croft, is notably absent from the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this weekend, with Mirror Sport learning that he is expected to miss only one more race this season. Croft has been a prominent figure as the voice of F1 for Sky Sports for over a decade and has been a fixture at every race weekend for many years. However, with the expansion of the F1 calendar to 24 races per season, even Croft occasionally takes weekends off. In both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he missed three weekends, including the Emilia-Romagna, Austrian, and Azerbaijan Grands Prix each time.
Harry Benjamin, the lead F1 commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live, stepped in to cover for Croft during these absences. Croft’s schedule for this year had to be adjusted due to Imola’s removal from the calendar, but it was still expected that he would miss three Grands Prix. However, during Friday practice in Barcelona, Benjamin made a surprising statement on air alongside co-commentator Karun Chandhok, hinting that he would only have one more opportunity to commentate for Sky Sports this season.
This revelation caught fans off guard, as many had anticipated that Croft would miss two more races before the season finale. However, recent developments, such as the cancellation of the two Middle Eastern rounds that were slated for April, have altered the situation. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which Croft was set to miss with Benjamin filling in, was canceled due to regional conflict following military actions in the area, shifting the commentator lineup for the rest of the season.
With the 2026 race calendar now reduced to 22 rounds, Croft is not expected to miss any more races beyond the three he had initially planned to skip. This weekend’s event in Barcelona is the second race for which Benjamin was lined up as a substitute, with one more replacement stint still to come before the season concludes. Croft himself hinted during live coverage in Monaco that he would be at the Download music festival during the Barcelona race weekend, as evidenced by his social media posts sharing his experiences at the event held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, a well-known motorsport circuit.
Donington Park has a history of hosting F1 races, notably the 1993 European Grand Prix won by Ayrton Senna in dramatic fashion. The circuit was also considered as a replacement for Silverstone as the venue for the British Grand Prix from 2010 onwards, though these plans fell through due to funding issues. Croft’s temporary absence from the F1 commentary booth has sparked interest and speculation among fans, eagerly awaiting his return and Benjamin’s continued contributions in the interim.
