Danielle Ponder signs with Dead Oceans, releases new song ‘Power’
Soulful vocalist Danielle Ponder, who hails from Rochester, is embarking on an exciting new phase in her music journey. The talented singer-songwriter has recently inked a deal with Dead Oceans, in collaboration with renowned artist Phoebe Bridgers. Dead Oceans represents a roster of diverse musicians, including Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Ethel Cain, and Bridgers herself.
In celebration of this milestone, Ponder dropped a fresh track titled “Power,” marking her first release since 2023. Speaking to News 8’s Gio Battaglia on “Behind the Curtain,” Ponder shared that the song is a heartfelt homage to her 17-year-old self and was inspired by her inaugural visit to Dakar, Senegal.
Recalling her transformative journey to Africa as a teenager, Ponder expressed how the experience reshaped her perceptions of history, identity, and heritage. Witnessing the vibrancy of Black leadership, culture, and community in Senegal broadened her understanding of Black history beyond the narratives often taught in the United States.
Decades later, Ponder returned to Dakar to shoot the music video for “Power” alongside director Fede Kortez. Describing the visuals as a jubilant celebration of Black culture and a poignant testament to the unity that binds Black people worldwide, Ponder emphasized the interconnectedness of the global Black community.
Revisiting Dakar after over 20 years felt like a poignant full-circle moment for Ponder, a sentiment she described as a warm embrace of her growth and life’s journey. The song’s release coincides with Ponder’s collaboration with Dead Oceans, a label that offers her the creative freedom to explore different musical genres. While recognized for her commanding soulful voice, Ponder shared that “Power” integrates influences from hip-hop, showcasing her artistic versatility and willingness to experiment.
Beyond her musical pursuits, Ponder, a former public defender, views her artistry as an extension of her activism. Emphasizing her fearless approach to music-making, she underlined her dual roles as both an artist and an activist, using her platform to advocate for social change.
Scheduled to perform at the Rochester Juneteenth Festival, Ponder expressed her excitement at unveiling “Power” live for her hometown audience. Reflecting on the significance of Rochester in shaping her musical career, Ponder credited the city as the foundational springboard for her artistic endeavors.
With a special message in “Power” aimed at inspiring young Black listeners to embrace their history, resilience, and identity, Ponder hopes to instill a sense of empowerment and pride in marginalized communities. Through her music, Ponder aims to amplify the voices of those who may feel overlooked or marginalized, channeling her passion for social justice into her soul-stirring melodies.
