Man bravely runs into burning Mesa home to save wife captured in new video
A recent incident in Mesa, Arizona, showcased a homeowner’s incredible act of bravery when he rushed into a massive house fire to save his wife who was still trapped inside. The dramatic footage of the event unfolded near Baseline and Sossman roads on a Wednesday night.
Patrick Birney, the homeowner, found himself outside his engulfed home witnessing explosions so intense that they caused a visceral reaction in everyone present. In a desperate plea to return to his wife, Birney recalls the intense exchange with police officers, explaining, “You don’t understand. My wife is still in there!” Without hesitation, Birney charged back into the burning house, risking his life to save his loved one.
In a remarkable show of courage, Mesa police officers stormed inside the blazing building to rescue the trapped couple. The gripping body-camera footage captured the intense 40-second rescue operation, culminating in a harrowing moment when three officers and Birney fell over a fence and into the flames. Despite sustaining second- and third-degree burns on his arm, Birney remained resolute in his decision, emphasizing, “I was just trying to save my family.”
Upon investigation, authorities determined that the fire may have ignited from pool chemicals, potentially due to a combination of the scorching weather and exhaust fumes near Birney’s work truck, which contained PVC glue and primer. As an employee of a pool company, Birney expressed shock over the unexpected turn of events, noting that the truck had been stored safely for years without incident.
Remarkably, Birney and his wife shared their home with a number of beloved pets, particularly stray cats and a dog they considered their children. Despite the chaos of the fire, the couple’s furry companions survived, but sadly, several feral cats perished in the blaze. Speaking about their pets, Birney emotionally revealed, “Those are our kids. We don’t have children. The cats and the dog are our children.”
Fortunately, Birney and his wife possessed insurance coverage for the rental property, allowing them to begin the process of recovery and rebuilding. In a heartwarming gesture, Birney’s loved ones initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist the couple in their journey towards healing. The incident serves as a testament to the resilience, bravery, and unwavering love that fuels human spirit in the face of adversity.
