Dwight + Nicole are a musical duo known for their genre-spanning delights. Their latest album, “Day or Night,” showcases their diverse sound that combines dream pop, indie rock, and downtempo jazz. According to the Boston Herald, Nicole Nelson described the album as a representation of various periods in their lives, rather than sticking to a specific genre or sound.

Before recording “Day or Night,” Dwight Ritscher and Nicole Nelson had about 150 song ideas that they had to narrow down to a few dozen. Working with producer Joel Hamilton at Studio G in Brooklyn, they brought a mix of genres to the table. Hamilton reassured them that their diverse songwriting abilities and personal experiences would create a cohesive record despite the various musical influences.

The final result was an album filled with slow-burn tunes that capture a delicate yet magnetic mood. Songs like “In the Middle” and “Straight Back to You” showcase the duo’s versatility, from light pop grooves to gentle ballads. Dwight + Nicole even included covers of Yaz’s “Only You” and Jenny Lewis’ “Melt Your Heart,” adding a unique touch to the album.

While many songs on “Day or Night” have a slower tempo, the music remains intense, reflecting the current times. Dwight + Nicole are still experimenting with how to perform these songs live, sometimes as a duo, trio, or quartet. Their upcoming show at Passim on June 26 will feature just the two of them, with plans to return in the fall with additional band members.

The duo plans to incorporate songs from the new album, fan favorites, and leave room for improvisation during their performances. With a mix of styles and influences, Dwight + Nicole’s music continues to captivate audiences, showing that their formula of embracing chance has led to their unique sound and success.
