Nicolas Cage character skin added to Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 despite Activision’s pledge
Activision recently announced the inclusion of Nicolas Cage’s skin in the game Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, despite their previous promise to avoid adding such random crossover skins. This move has reignited frustrations among fans who have long criticized the series for its increasingly bizarre celebrity crossovers, likely influenced by the success of Fortnite.
Last year, Battlefield 6 took a dig at Call Of Duty’s tendency to feature celebrity cameos, prompting Activision to acknowledge the fans’ dissatisfaction with the game’s deviation from its original essence. This acknowledgment led to promises of a more ‘authentic’ experience in the upcoming Black Ops 7. However, the addition of Nicolas Cage as himself contradicts this commitment.
While fans hoped for a crossover with one of Cage’s action movies like Con Air or The Rock, it turns out that the collaboration simply features Cage as himself, with no tie-ins to his cinematic works offered in the new season pass content. Activision’s actions indicate a departure from the company’s previous stance on celebrity cameos, hinting at a selective interpretation of what constitutes an authentic addition to the game.
Although Black Ops 7 has indulged in crossovers over the past six months, including Fallout themed skins and characters like RoboCop and Terry Crews, the addition of Nicolas Cage raises questions about Activision’s definition of authenticity. While characters like Cage and Crews boast action movie credentials, the introduction of unrelated crossovers, such as those from the world of music or sports, has diverged from the military aesthetic that fans associate with Call Of Duty.
The growing trend of unconventional celebrity skins and crossovers began around 2023, coinciding with the declining reputation of the franchise following the release of Modern Warfare 3. This entry, seen as a poorly received DLC expansion masquerading as a sequel, marked a low point for the series. While subsequent titles like Black Ops 6 managed to regain some favor, the missteps in Black Ops 7 have led Activision to reassess its approach, vowing to avoid consecutive sequels in the Black Ops or Modern Warfare series.
As the upcoming release of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 may not be able to address the shortcomings of Black Ops 7, Activision must prioritize restoring fan confidence. However, the decision to include whimsical celebrity skins in the game risks further alienating players and undermining efforts to address the franchise’s ongoing challenges. Ultimately, the focus should be on delivering a coherent and immersive experience that resonates with the core audience, rather than relying on superficial crossovers that detract from the game’s identity and appeal.
