The heart of downtown Ames is being transformed by a burst of colorful murals that are breathing new life into the blank walls of the city’s buildings. Thanks to The Ames Foundation, these vibrant artworks are creating a fresh and artistic atmosphere in the alleys of downtown Ames.

Reverend Doctor, an acclaimed soul/pop/funk R&B artist, is making a triumphant return to his hometown of Ames for a special performance that promises to bring together music, community, and a touch of sweetness. The event will take place at Mary Jane’s, located at 119 Main St, with doors opening at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, and admission by free-will donation.

At the show, attendees can enjoy not only Reverend Doctor’s soulful music but also indulge in soul food and ice cream offerings available at the venue. Born and raised in Ames, Keith Rollins, the mastermind behind Reverend Doctor, has gone on to establish a successful career that has taken him across the country.

Bryon Dudley, co-owner of Mary Jane’s, shared that although Reverend Doctor now resides in California, he frequently performs in the state and tours extensively, venturing as far as Ohio. Rollins’ musical style draws on influences from soul-pop legends like Marvin Gaye, the flamboyance of Prince, and the energetic loops of Ed Sheeran. His music has been described as touching a deep emotional chord within listeners, resonating with those trying to navigate the complexities of life.

For Dudley and the team at Mary Jane’s, Reverend Doctor’s concert is more than just an ordinary event; it’s a homecoming celebration for an artist who carries his Ames roots with him wherever he goes. Dudley expressed the artist’s eagerness to return home and engage with his local community.

Reverend Doctor’s performances are characterized by their warmth and inclusivity, creating an intimate space where vulnerability is transformed into strength. His debut solo album, titled “Body,” was released in 2025 and encapsulates a year’s worth of soul-stirring singles that explore the theme of maintaining one’s integrity amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

With music, delectable soul food from Nisha’s Soul Food (formerly known as Taste of Something Different), ice cream from Sweet Minnie’s, and a crowd of local supporters, Mary Jane’s aims to provide a relaxed and celebratory environment for all attendees. According to Dudley, the ultimate goal of the event is to foster a sense of community spirit and pride in welcoming back a talented artist who continues to blossom and grow.
